This book is the result of the work undertaken by an interdisciplinary group of scientists, as part of the conceptualisation phase of the PIRVE programme. It provides original and critical insights into the main research tracks (thematic or disciplinary) that shape the city and environment field. Beyond case studies, it aims to present in a clear way the state of scientitic knowledge (results, controversies, hot issues) on the relationships between urbanised societies and their natural and built environments. Its objective is to higlight the complex interactions, at different spatial and temporal scales, between the different dimensions of the functioning and evolution of urban systems.
